Anyway, thought it might have been like the cutthroat olympics here -- how does someone like that keep their job in a place like this?

Please - it's not anything like that, believe me. If anything, a bit more competition around here would probably be good for us.

[ Yuri has a funny image of Juri racing in the pool against some other unknowns and he snorts. ]

Maybe you guys should set some kinda friendly, consistent competition between yourselves then and totally end the current murder competition between us alive folks here. Sounds like a sweet trade, huh?

[He kind of smirks at that, really, leaning back in his chair idly as he does so.]

Honestly? Sometimes I think that'd be good. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike being here, but I've got a few people I'd like to show up somehow.

[ Well, he can't say he's surprised since the guy seemed to like the place a good amount. ]

...You could always try racing them in a pool for one. It could help settle old scores if you actually beat them.

Why not? It'll be a nice change of pace. Get a little wet, splash the losers in the face after the whole thing's done.

[ Dramatic pause. ]

Wait. Don't tell me--you can't swim?

[Hahahahaha oh no.]

I'm good at it, actually. I told Jean earlier that if I were in your situation and decided I was going to ask for a room here, it'd probably be that.

[ Oh well. ]

Right. Ever say who taught you or are you just naturally talented at everything that you can just teach yourself easily that sort of thing?

[...You know, judging from his expression that's actually a good question?]

...I don't know.

[hesperos]

[ Yuri stumbling him way through things in a way that doesn't end in a disaster? That is a little bit remarkable. ]

...You don't? Why not?

There's some stuff I just...know how to do. I haven't really questioned why too much.

...You know, you probably should.

If you do, you might find out answers that way. Doesn't being in the dark about those things kinda suck?

I don't really think about it.

[But that's...weird, and kind of blunted, a hard edge coming into it outside of the usual apathy.]

[hesperos]

You don't? And you're okay with that?

[ He's definitely noticing the edge there... hard not to when the guy usually seems to be so blasé about everything. ]

Some things just are what they are, you know? It's not going to change whether I dwell on it or not.

[ Something about this sounds familiar-- although unfortunately he is not a mind reader it bothers him enough that there's a pause for a moment before he considers his next words. ]

Some things are what they are sometimes because people don't bother to think about changing them or they just believe they can't do anything about it so they just decide it's fine as is, even if they're pretty dissatisfied with how things are.

I can't pretend to know your circumstances or your whole story or whatever, because I don't, and I don't usually waste my time because of your involvement with those bastards running this show. Though, if you ask me (which you didn't), your words sound like they're coming from not only your usual self, but also like you're kinda giving up here.

You're pretty against the concept of giving up as a whole, aren't you?

Just because it looks like something's impossible, doesn't really mean it is. Guess that quality is one out of our many differences, huh?
