Well, yeah. I mean, I'm supposed to be impartial, and a lot of the time I don't particularly care what you guys do.

Some things piss me off, though.

I'm certainly glad that you do care about your own life, at the very least. With how nonchalant you have been the whole time, I was beginning to worry that you had a problem with apathy.

Such defiance. The first step to defeating a vice is admitting that you have a problem.

I wouldn't say it's a vice, either. It's just kind of how I've always been.

Even since childhood?

[That sounds kind of sad actually.]

I didn't exactly have a normal childhood. But I guess so.

Yeah? What wasn't normal about it?

I don't really remember anything about it.

[He shifts one of his hands a bit, running it over the surface of the desk, trailing his fingers over the imperfections in the wood.]

Most I really recall is having a prophetic dream once, telling me what I'm supposed to do with my life. Otherwise, I don't remember anything. Just the dream. And then I woke up somewhere kind of like this, almost like all of you did, only I didn't know anything about myself. No memories of anyone I might have been, no goals, no name, nothing.

I'd guess that sort of thing doesn't really come with having a normal life, though.

[He had thought that Juri had been hired in or something, or that he was at least volunteered. But if he had been dragged from his own world...]

Were you in a game like this? As a player, I mean, not as someone running it.

No. I've seen a lot of them, and I've run a lot of them. But I've never played.

But if your memories were gone, like ours were, that means you were brought here like we were...right? Even if it was to run games, instead of participate in them, you were still taken here first.

[andexecutioner]

[He shrugs after a moment.]

It's not really important, I don't think.

Why not. You were potentially brought here, wiped of all of your memories, and then told to manage 'games' in which people kill each other. Doesn't that lack of agency bother you in the slightest? I know if I were going to send people to their deaths, I would at least like to have it be because of a personal choice on my part, not because of amnesia-induced coercion.

[That just gets one of those odd, blank looks out of him.]

Whatever the reason is...I'm still doing it, aren't I?

What? Of course the reasons matter! The reason why you do something is just as important as what you did, if not more! There's a reason things like 'self-defense justifications' exist!

No, I know that.

[The hand that was trailing over the desk comes up to run itself through his hair; the gesture is more idle than frustrated.]

At the same time, there's a difference between understandable and justifiable, and that's what I'm getting at.

[Luca is practically tearing out his hair here, but after a moment he forces his hand away from his hair and tries to speak in a collected voice.]

So you feel what has happened here isn't justifiable?

[andexecutioner]

[I'd say he'd apologize if he was sorry but I'm pretty sure we both know he wouldn't.]

I feel most of the people here would believe that it isn't, and as such this is kind of a moot line of questioning. Once things get beyond a certain threshold of what's not acceptable, the reasoning behind it pretty much doesn't matter to anyone but the person who's doing it.

The people here aren't going to think that it's justifiable because they're the ones who might die because of it. But what do you think? Do you think your actions are justifiable?

I think it doesn't matter whether they are or not. Things like that don't really concern me.

It seems like you can't be swayed on that point, then. And since you seem to be doing alright, I will go ahead and leave you be for the night.
